Kimbriki
- Household Recycling
At Kimbriki
Recycling and Waste Disposal Centre the Household Recycling Area is
well used by local residents, local businesses and residents of neighbouring
councils.
There are
points for the collection of various recyclables: Vehicle batteries,
Charity toy repair, Charity cork collection, Charity clothing collection,
Bottle glass, Recyclable plastics PET and HDPE, Aluminium cans,
Cardboard and paper, Tyres and motor oil.
Vehicle
batteries
Vehicle
batteries collected by a local scrap dealer, Associated Scrap, are taken
to Australian Refined Alloys, Alexandria (a joint venture of Pasminco
and Simsmetal). Batteries are recycled to recover the lead; but the plastic
casings are also recycled. A benefit from this processing is that the
sulphuric acid is neutralised with lime, though the gypsum this forms
currently goes to landfill. More than 98% of the lead and associated
metals are recycled.
Charity
toy repair
The Peninsula
Senior Citizens Toy Repair Group collects and repairs toys that have
been delivered to their shed. The mended and cleaned toys are given
to childrens charities. Any further enquiries: Mr Bob Holmes 9913
8182.
Charity
cork collection
Corks are
collected for the RSL Cork Recycling Project. The cork is recycled in
Australia and the proceeds fund much needed medical equipment at the
RSL War Veterans Hospital, Collaroy Plateau.
Charity
clothing collection
Used clothing
is deposited into The Smith Family bins. The charity regularly clears
the bins and finds their presence at Kimbriki yields a high volume of
good quality clothing either for re-use through their charity shops
or as textiles for their industrial rag supply.
Bottle
glass
Colour
separated bottle glass is collected by SMS and delivered to
ACI at Botany for recycling. For more information about the benefits
of recycling glass see www.acipackaging.com.
Recyclable
plastics PET and HDPE
These plastics are collected,
sorted and pelleted into resins by VISY at the Waste Management Park
at Chullora. These are sold as post consumer resins suitable for blow
moulding and injection moulding and other plastic manufacturing applications.
For more information about plastic packaging see:

Aluminium
cans
Aluminum
cans collected at Kimbriki are now sent to Associated Scrap who supply
aluminium back to industry. Information and activities for schools are
available on this website
www.aluminium-cans.com.au
Cardboard
and paper
VISY Recycling
collects the continuous supply of quality cardboard delivered to Kimbriki
from local businesses. The cardboard and paper is recycled at Smithfield
where 1,000 tonnes of materials is processed daily. Currently cardboard
earns more royalty money than paper.
See www.visy.com.au
Tyres
Up to 5
tyres can be disposed of per customer visit (limit set by the EPA).
These are charged separately to mixed waste loads. The tyres are removed from the site by Roadrubber Tyres. They
are taken to Enviroguards shredding processing facility
Tyrecycle at Erskine Park. Rims are removed prior to disposal.
Motor
oil
Used motor
oil deposited by customers into the storage tank onsite is collected
by Nationwide Oil. At Wetherill Park, NSW the oil is recovered by a
unique chemical process that removes water and heavy metals without
the need for high temperatures which often causes unsatisfactory air
emissions. The re-refining process effectively removes contaminants
such as heavy metals, free carbon (soot), residual additives and asphaltenes,
from the used oil feedstock. The waste water is treated with coagulants
and flocculants; the waste goes to a fixing plant at Lidcombe and the
water to Sydney Water monitored every 15 days.
Other
Recycling at Kimbriki
At Kimbriki,
recycling is a major initiative that has developed over the last 13
years. The household recycling is only a small part of the recycling
onsite. Approximately 70% of the total waste in is recycled out of the
site. The major areas of recycling are:
Vegetation shredded into soil conditioner mulch and woodchip;
Metal sent to scrap metal recyclers;
and Concrete, Brick, Terracotta and Asphalt crushed into gravels.
