Narrabeen Lagoon - Rehabilitation of Mullet and Nareen Creeks

Pittwater Council has adopted draft rehabilitation plans for Mullet and Nareen Creeks in the Narrabeen Lagoon Catchment area. The plans, partly funded through the state government’s Estuary Management Program, set out key actions to prevent further degradation of the two creeks which have been identified as having major problems with sedimentation build-up, pollution and weed infestation.
The plans were prepared following consultation with the Pittwater community via a community-wide survey and workshops. Key actions recommended include:
- Regular catchment audits
- Partnerships between Pittwater Council, businesses and property-owners to address weed infestation
- Public awareness and education campaigns
- Best practice guidelines on weedkiller and fertiliser use
- Targeted weed eradication
- Monitoring and regulation of vegetation clearance near the creeks
- Bank stabilisation works
Update - August 2008
Pittwater Council has commenced $190,000 of bush regeneration works at Nareen and Mullet Creek.
Works at Nareen Creek will take place in Nareen/Narroy Park and Kundibah Reserve and will target noxious weed species including Ludwigia peruviana, Rhizomatus Bamboo, Maderia Vine, Privet and Lantana. Works at Mullet Creek will stretch from the upper Warriewood escarpment and down through Irrawong Reserve, targeting both aquatic and terrestrial weeds.
