Neighbour Day – Sunday 28 March 2010

Make that Connection!

Neighbour Day is an annual celebration of community. It provides an opportunity for neighbours from next door and across the street to get to know each other better.

Warringah Council aims to foster strong neighbourhood connections by encouraging the simple concept of “neighbourliness”. The aim is to raise awareness of the issues of isolation, security and the benefits of having connections within our communities.

Neighbour Day takes place on the last Sunday in March every year. This year Warringah Council is inviting you to use our resources to connect and celebrate with your neighbourhood.

Our easy Step by Step Guide and printable resources, such as our Introduction Card, Invitation, and Reminder Note will help you to organise your Neighbour Day event.

We can also support you by providing information on how to book public spaces and help you promote your particular gathering. For more information email haynen@warringah.nsw.gov.au.

What You Can Do
Anyone can participate in Neighbour Day. You don’t have to buy a ticket or spend a lot of money.
Here are some ideas:

  • Organise a Neighbour Day event – a barbecue, garden party, picnic or afternoon tea in a local park.
  • Go out and say “G’day” to your neighbours and maybe make some new friends!
  • Use the introduction card from our resource kit to exchange information.
  • Make a special effort to introduce yourself to older residents on the street and anyone who lives alone. Leave them your mobile or home telephone number for use in an emergency.
  • Agree to keep in contact.
  • Help out by collecting mail when neighbours are away and keep an eye on their property.
  • Try car pooling if kids go to the same school or you work/shop in the same area.
  • Get fit, try jogging or walking together.
  • Get together with neighbours who have dogs for “walkies”.
  • Share surpluses of garden produce.
  • Come to the Warringah Council’s Music in March event at Dee Why Beach on Sunday 28 March and invite your neighbours.

You may have some other ideas. If you do we would love to hear them so that
we can share them with others. Contact our Admin & Project Officer,
