Media Release - Fall in Love with Reading at Warringah
Nearly half of the Australian population can’t read with any fluency. To address this problem, Warringah Council libraries will help launch the National Year of Reading on Valentine’s Day, Tuesday 14 February.
The aim of the National Year of Reading is to reintroduce people to the magic of books and remind all of us that reading is an important life skill.
Nearly half the population struggles with the literacy skills needed to meet the most basic demands of everyday life.
The easiest way to address this issue is to give children a good start through the early love of stories and reading.
Warringah libraries will have an ongoing program of activities throughout the year to support the goals of the National Year of Reading, including programs for mothers and babies and many programs targeted at school aged children.
This year Warringah libraries will focus on the importance of adopting a reading culture at home. Library staff has been trained to provide advice on great stories and appropriate material for people of all ages in order to support a life-long love of reading.
Encourage a reading culture at home:
- Visit the library regularly
- Share books with children every day
- Seek help for literacy or learning problems.
