Media Release - Strategy for a Sustainable Warringah

February 14, 2012

Warringah Council has produced a blueprint for managing the environment over the next ten years.

The Draft Environment Sustainability Strategy will go to Council on Tuesday 14 February and, if adopted, will be placed on public exhibition for public comment.

The Strategy is a high level directions document to provide Council with guidance in setting priorities for project planning and funding allocation.

The Strategy includes ambitious targets to cut carbon emissions and food waste by 40% by 2020.

It also aims to have local food production and distribution increased by 50%.

"We're blessed to live in this part of the world but our beautiful natural environment comes with responsibility," said a Council Spokeswoman.

The Strategy identifies six key outcomes including measures to transition Warringah to more sustainable living and working.

Other outcomes focus on climate change, biodiversity, coasts and waterways, bushland and sustainable recreational access to natural areas.

Measures suggested in the Strategy include creating a local "green economy" with local businesses and industry, increased shading of urban areas to reduce temperatures and encouraging more community gardens.

Warringah has 14km of coastline, four lagoons an extensive creek network and close to 900 hectares of bushland and open space.
