Dee Why Children's Centre is a Long Day Care Centre managed by Warringah Council and has been operating since 1976. The centre caters for 70 children each day. Staffed by experienced and qualified child care workers and teachers, the centre provides an educational environment for children with daily programs of hands-on learning through art and craft, language, music and physical movement and development. The centre offers comprehensive school readiness experiences as part of the program. The centre also provides children with healthy, nutritious meals and snacks throughout the day. Special dietary, cultural and religious requirements are catered for without difficulty.

Philosophy

At Dee Why Children's Centre, we believe parents and staff can work together to provide the best possible foundation for the growth of each child. We strive to create a centre which reflects, compliments and supports the home environment and welcomes people as individuals.

We believe that a mutual sharing of knowledge and feedback between parents and staff will help to provide a continuity of care and expectations within the centre and the home.

Our primary goal is to provide a secure, supportive, nurturing environment to promote a high sense of self worth and respect for individuality, families and cultures.

The Program

Children come to our Service with a uniqueness that is a combination of their family background, culture, experiences, needs, interests and strengths. Dee Why Children's Centre implement the emergent curriculum approach to programming. This is where teachers support children’s development through their interest. Our program also reflects the NSW Curriculum Framework and the Federal Government Early Years Learning Framework.

The Centre provides individual developmentally appropriate programs for all the children based on observations and discussions with families. The Staff provide daily programs for indoor and outdoor activities aimed at motivating, stimulating, challenging and extending the skills of the children in our care. The centre offers a comprehensive school readiness experience as part of the program.

Parents are encouraged to take advantage of child developmental meetings with staff (akin to parent teacher meetings at school) to discuss their child’s progress and areas of concern.

Accreditation

The Quality Improvement and Accreditation System (QIAS) is administered by the Federal Government.  Its broad aim is to ensure that children in care have stimulating, positive experiences and interactions that nurture all aspects of their development.  Child care Service providers are reviewed against these principles.

Dee Why Children's Centre was last accredited in May 2009 and achieved a high quality rating in all areas.   A copy of the centre profile can be viewed in the foyer of the centre.  The next review of our centre will take place after July 2011.

For further information on the QIAS system go to www.ncac.gov.au

Parent Participation

Dee Why Children's Centre welcomes family participation in the service and has an "open door" policy and we encourage parents to be active participants in the running of the centre. We seek innovative ways to involve parents and provide opportunities for input in decision making.
